Labor Day Activities in the Classroom
Today’s blog post consists of Labor Day activities for the classroom. I am going to share some activities that could work in your classroom for the month of September. To read more about holidays in the classroom, read my Four Tips for Celebrating Holidays In The Classroom.
Introducing Labor Day
Labor Day is an especially important holiday in the school setting because it can provide students a perfect opportunity to thank ALL the workers at the school that help them each and every day. First things first, introduce the holiday. I always start with a social story, because that’s just how I worked as a teacher. I liked to have the Labor Day social story binded as a book to re-use over the years but also use the coloring book version for the kiddos to follow along with. This helped kiddos stay engaged with the story and to turn it into a hands on activity.
Craft Ideas
Looking for some Labor Day craft ideas in the classroom?
Here is one FREE Labor Day craft idea for you! Simply print these free puppets from First Palette, color, cut and attach to popsicle sticks. These crafts can turn into great discussion props. Some examples: Show me who puts out fires. What do you want to be when you grow up? What am I?
This sample craft idea from Baby Gizmo is a great idea for the classroom for Labor Day too. I love it because you can simply collect old magazines and provide some scissors and glue. Give students the opportunity to flip through the pages to choose things that inspire them and what they think they want to be when they grow up. Discussing student goals and what they want to be when they grow up is perfect for Labor Day.
This adorable freebie from Simply Kinder is a perfect worksheet for Labor Day to implement into your language arts rotations. It can be a great discussion starting point about what they want to be when they grow up!
Communication Opportunities
I believe in ALL things communication, holidays included. I created a holiday communication book to add to your communication activities in the classroom. Simply add this Labor Day page to your students existing communication book or create a holiday book to pull out for the holidays. Pair this communication board with all of the activities for the month!
These toys/tools would be a great addition to your structured Labor Day communication activities. With these toys/activities, kiddos can play dress up, conduct role playing activities and build the communication activities!
Books and Activities
I really love picture books. There is no secret that I have an obsession with buying ALL the books! Here are a few books that I recommend for the whole month of September for Labor Day and community helper activities:
- Whose Vehicle Is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper
- When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic
- Whose Hat Is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper
- Whose Tools Are These? By Sharon Katz Cooper
- Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do by Kathryn Heling
- The Berenstain Bears: When I Grow Up by Mike Berenstain
Also, I love to include hands on activities to complete the holiday celebration. This sensory bin activity from Pocket of Preschool is SO DANG CUTE and just perfect for Labor Day. I saw it and immediately wanted to make it for Tucker! How cute is this for a community helpers extension activity for the month of September and Labor Day?
Videos and Songs
Finally, I love to introduce holidays with videos too. Here are two you tube videos for you to play for your classroom on Labor Day.
- The first one is a cute little song that the kiddos can sing a long to
- The second video is a little longer but gives more detail, history and facts about Labor Day. This could be a great transition back into the classroom after recess or lunch!
In summary, I hope you are able to use these Labor Day activities for the classroom this year. Labor Day is a great holiday, and all should be celebrated for all of their hard work. Let’s have our students thank those at the school. Looking for some free holiday resources? Check out my Birthday’s In the Classroom post.
