“How To Set Up A Special Education Program”- Organization in a Classroom

· ·
Organizing all of
your little PECs Icons can be a challenge in any special education
program.
At the end of the day, those
icons can be found everywhere in the classroom.

Finding a simple storage system to make setting up schedules,
communication books and activities a breeze is imperative to making it
functional for any teacher.
  Consider
purchasing an organizer like this one to organize by image.
This can be found in the art section of most
craft stores.

Planning ahead as
a teacher is crucial to keep students engaged and occupied during the school
day.
  Our students and parents love
crafts, however it is a lot of work to prepare for them.
Here are a simple tips to make art time that
much easier. Have all materials prepped the month prior, organized in a large
Ziploc baggie or manila envelope for each craft.
Have a post it note with the needed supplies
for that day such as scissors and glue etc. Then, when you are ready to do the
craft you have everything planned out ahead of time!
Here are some prepped December crafts.  Here are a few samples:

If you are lucky
to have a restroom within your classroom, organization of bathroom supplies is
easy.  However, if you have to walk
students to the restroom, it is important to organize the necessary supplies so
that you are not stranded in the restroom.
Simply create a “bathroom bag” in a bag large enough to store the items
with a zipper to keep your belongings tight!

I store all of my
calendar materials in the top drawer of a file cabinet I keep in the front of
the classroom.

It is a good idea
to have extra worksheets already copied ready to go.  This is important for when you need time
fillers throughout the day.  Organize
copies of worksheets by subjects in labeled bins for quick and easy access by
teachers and staff.
It is important to
have work centers organized.  By color
coding your student groups (high group, medium group and low group) it will
make centers much easier to manage.
Students working cards, folders and group signs will all match.  This will make it super easy for staff to
implement efficient work centers.

WOHOOO!  Chapter 11 is a wrap.  Tomorrow we will be talking about a sensitive subject…. Staffing.  My staff is my rock- without them none of this would be possible!
